General House & Gardens Opening

Always plenty to see at any time

Kentwell holds many Events throughout the season but many visitors find it a delight to visit when there is nothing extra on. They can then fully enjoy Kentwell's unrivalled romantic air and tranquillity.

House

Visitors can see the House best when there are no other activities in any of the rooms. Discerning visitors enjoy its stunning exterior and its setting first by walking round the exterior, each face of which is different, before venturing within. Once inside wander through, study the Room Boards (which some find very entertaining as well as informative) and share what is the essence of Kentwell - a grand, maybe, but an eminently habitable, home.

House Opening Times

The House usually opens one hour after and closes one hour before the advertised Opening and Closing times for the day. Before travelling on any Saturday be sure to telephone to check that we are open because we sometimes close, or close early, then for a Function. Of course, if we have any sort of Event on a Saturday we shall be open then. During the Main Re-Creation only part of the House is used and the rest is closed. During all other Events the House is accessible even though there may be Event activities in some of the rooms.

Moat House Visitors should never miss this - the service building of c1500 with Dairy, Bakehouse, Brewhouse and Stillroom Solar usually set up very much of that date. It is better to view it before entering the Hall.

The Gardens

Are a pleasure to walk round at any time. The visitor is never far from water. The Moat encircling the Hall's platform and the Cedar Lawn is one of the biggest in East Anglia and its brick walled lining gives it a rare feeling. There is also a secondary moat (evidence of the House's original status) round the Walled Garden. Everywhere in the Gardens the House provides a stunning backdrop just as the Gardens provide the perfect setting for the House. For the more adventurous there are walks into adjoining woods. The longer a visitor spends at Kentwell the more the visitor may see with plenty of surprises.

Farm

The Farm Buildings are of interest at any time. It is a working farm with many of the animals usually to be seen in their natural setting some grazing in the Paddocks and Fields and some in their housing. To see young animals it is best to come during lambing in February to April each year.

Gardens & Farm Opening

It is rare for any part of the Gardens or Farm to be closed on Open days even when we are holding Events but if it is important to visitors that a particular part should be accessible on the day of their visit, they should check by telephone before deciding to visit. Please note that all visitors on an Event day must pay the appropriate Event Admission price.

Historic Houses Association Members

Are admitted free on days when House and Gardens are advertised as Open. On all Event days HHA Members enjoy no concession and are charged the appropriate admission prices for that Event.
