Opera in the Overcroft
Mozart & Salieri by Rimsky Korsakov and Vienna Nights.
Sat 27 May, 7.30pm
Mozart & Salieri
The opera follows the apocryphal legend that Salieri poisoned his rival Mozart out of jealousy over his talent. Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) used the short story Mozart and Salieri by Alexander Pushkin as libretto, which later also inspired Peter Shaffer’s famous play and film Amadeus.
Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera is a character study, illustrating a close-up of Salieri’s tormented mind, torn between admiration for his fellow composer and his jealousy.
In a new English translation and staged by an award-winning team, this innovative production will captivate its audience, making us witnesses, if not conspirators, of Salieri’s plan to poison Mozart.
“A magnificent piece of entertainment that keeps the audience enthralled all the way to its very last note" LONDON THEATRE ONE
The second half is devoted to famous arias and duets from some of Mozart's best loved opera such as Don Giovanni and the Magic Flute.
The first half will make you think. The second will allow you to bask in some of Opera's best moments.
