Ideal for Families
Great for children and families! Special events and acres of gardens and grounds to explore.
Kentwell is the originator of historical live educational events in the UK. Since we started, nearly 40 years ago, we've had over half a million schoolchildren pass through our gates.
Our Home Educators Event is especially for those families who have chosen to educate their children outside of mainstream schools.
What we offer is the biggest, most comprehensive, and most authentic Tudor experience you will get anywhere. We Re-Create life on a community scale, our entire historic house and estate are transformed into a 16th Century Manor, with over 200 inhabitants of all ages, skills and wealth carrying out a huge variety of daily tasks.
You cannot get a better experience in the UK for giving children a real insight into life in Tudor England.
A visitor to our Home Educators Event said:
A huge thank you to you and everyone at Kentwell for a wonderful, memorable day at Kentwell yesterday.
We had not heard of Kentwell before it came up on the Home Ed lists. We travelled from Oxfordshire the day before, visited Lavenham on Tuesday and stayed nearby overnight, so it was quite a big trip for us. The lead-up to it, with the costume-making, was great fun too.
My six year old and our German teenage friend both voted it fantastic. The Tudor characters were all great, and they were excellent at pitching things just right for our different ages and experiences. We've used it as an introduction to the Tudors and to see and take part in such a range of activities was just perfect. We managed to visit virtually every part, with a repeat visit to the blacksmith who was a favourite. The girls are downstairs at the moment working enthusiastically on pricked designs of Tudor roses onto little wooden panels - they've mixed powder paint in cockle shells inspired also by the miniature painters and I can hear them discussing Tudor dancing as they do their painting. They are keen to try some natural dyeing and to try to make felt hats too.
Please do not think that Kentwell is just a fair weather visit - we carry on whatever the weather. There will be indoor activities and some of our outdoor activities can be moved inside if the weather fails us.
How long to spend?
Most people will spend most of the afternoon here - there is so much to do and see.
The event will open to Home Educators from 1.30pm. You are welcome to arrive on site from 12.30pm if you would like to picnic prior to entering the event. Many Home Educator visitors find this an ideal networking time! Last entry is at 3pm - if you arrive later than this, you will not get the full value of your visit. The House and the Bakery/Dairy area will close at 4pm and the whole event will close at 5.30pm.
We do not allow picnics inside the Tudor event, however you are welcome to use our picnic area. We will have a catering trailer serving hot and cold drinks, and light snacks, near to the picnic area.
Please note, dogs are not allowed within the grounds.

Spring on the Farm
Kentwell's flock of rare-breed Norfolk Horn sheep begin lambing in mid-March, one of the best times to explore Kentwell with spring bulbs, flowers and Welly Walks through the gardens and grounds.
Head to the Tudor Stables to see the newborn lambs, and if you are lucky, watch a lambing! Once the lambs are a few days old they will be racing around the lawns in front of the Hall.
Lambing continues through the Easter holidays.
Why not drop into the Tearoom and try our new menu, featuring freshly-cooked meals and snacks for explorers of all ages?
Lunches and Teas
Lunches, teas and light refreshments will be available from our Stableyard Tearoom.
Please ensure that you wash your hands after touching any of our animals.

Halloweenies - Kentwell’s School of Sorcery & Magic
This October Half-Term, join us at Kentwell Hall, for our most fun haunting children’s event of the year.
This Halloween, Kentwell’s School of Sorcery and Magic will be opening for business, and accepting new students. Come along for a morning or afternoon of fun filled magical learning including wand making, spell school and potions class, we will ensure all of those whom attend graduate with flying colours. As a budding wizard or witch, it’s down to you to put your skills to the test in our magical woodlands, riddled with all manner of mystical challenges and fun characters to meet and interact with.
At Spell School you will meet all manner of staff from the Caretaker to the Head Teacher, and your lessons will consist of wand making, potion class and an interactive spell lesson, but you will also visit the potion store and there will also be a couple of surprises on the day at the school for you to explore. Spell School will be inside and will take around an hour to pass through the classes through to graduation.
During your visit you will also be able to explore our Enchanted Forest where you will be able roam freely on our trails and visit a couple of key characters from the school including the mystical plants and creatures professors and of course a couple of spooky surprises along the way.
Our Stable Yard Tearoom will be open and serving a range of seasonal treats to warm you through at this most haunting time of the year!
Dress up in your favourite Halloween outfits for double the fun - be sure to wrap up warm for indoor and outdoor fun.
Advance booking strongly recommended - we sold out last year and may not have any tickets available to buy on the day!
Activities take place in two daily sessions - we have a morning session, from 10am to 12.30pm and an afternoon session from 1.30pm to 4pm. Gates open at 9.45am and 1.15pm.
Access: as the School of Sorcery is set in our 15th Century Moat House building, there will be no pushchair access and limited disability access. Within the magical woodlands trail we will have pram and wheelchair access but again this may be limited due to weather conditions.
Age range: the Halloweenies event is specifically created for children to enjoy up to the age of 10, however we do not put restrictions on children over this age range if they would like to attend.
Time Slots: The School of Sorcery and Magic will be a set time slot that will be allocated on arrival, so if you are a bigger group and would like to attend together, please ensure that you arrive at the same time. Groups of 40 will attend the school at each given time slot and this will take on average one hour to complete.
Children will need to be supervised by parents or carers at all times.
Clothing - please ensure that children are dressed for outdoors as well as indoors as this event will be going ahead whatever the weather.
Gates open at 9.45am and 1.15pm
Will it be scary?
As Scaresville’s Little Monster, we’re embracing all things Halloween, but it will be more Halloween-inspired than scary - suitable for our younger visitors!
What should we wear?
Dress up warm for indoor and outdoor activities. Fancy dress encouraged for twice the fun!
What happens if it rains?
There will be a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities, but always best to wrap up warm and come prepared.
Can we leave the kids for the day?
No, a parent or guardian must be with their children at all times. The main trail lasts about an hour, so we don’t anticipate this being an all day event.
What about Hungry Little Monsters?
A range of ghoulishly delicious food and snacks will be available for your little monsters from the stableyard. Food for big monsters will be available too!
Will the House and Gardens be open?
Areas of the House and Garden not used for our adult scare event, Scaresville, will be part of the Halloweenies Trail.
