2012 Lambing and Spring Bulbs

When everything's fresh and new
On the Farm
Kentwell has a flock of Norfolk Horn sheep. These were the breed of sheep that made East Anglia wealthy hundreds of years ago. Records show that Norfolk sheep were at Kentwell in the 16th Century.
When Kentwell first started keeping the breed some 30 years ago it was the rarest sheep breed in the UK with just a handful of sheep. With three other breeders Kentwell saved the breed from extinction. Numbers are now far healthier.
Distinct features of the breeds are that they are horned in both sexes and have black skins. Their wool is white but the underlying skin colour gives the sheep their black points on feet, face and ears. So we have plenty of black sheep - but only so long as they remain young lambs !
Lambing
We bring the sheep in for ease of Lambing and visitors may see lambs being born.
In 2012 Lambing should start in mid March and continue through April. There can be no better sight than seeing young lambs being born and, as they grow, lambs of all ages gambolling about.
Days to see Lambing
From the 17th & 18th March (Mothers' Day), then 25th & 31st March and on all Open Days during April 2012. Each day from 11am to 4pm. Lambing should commence in mid-March and you will be able to visit expectant ewes and nursing ewes & lambs and maybe even see a lamb being born!
Other Animals
Visitors at this time can also see the other animals on the Farm. The Heavy Horses and the Riding Horses are often in and sometimes are being groomed. We usually have young or youngish piglets.
Feeding Round
Visitors at this time of year may join the afternoon feed round which usually starts at about 3.00pm.
Spring Bulbs
Kentwell offers lovely walks through spring bulbs. In February we have extensive Snowdrops and lovely snowdrop walks. As the Snowdrops die back, usually in early March they are followed by Daffodils with the first flush usually well established by early March.
Our Daffodils usually last well into April and some even into May. After the daffodils come Primroses, Cowslips, Oxslips, Bugle, Violets and Forget-me-nots. Finally in May there are Bluebells. By then, the Fruit Blossom in the Walled Garden is in flower and the Herb Garden and Potager are coming to their peak.
Spring is the time to visit Kentwell's Garden.
