Christmas Tours
Christmas Tours
These will show off the House's Christmas Decorations and in so doing you will hear how the various elements that make up the typical picture of Christmas today developed from the Ancient Pagan Festival of Saturnalia. You may be surprised how many different sources have contributed to what many people may think is a distinct whole. Also, how recently many 'traditional' elements were added.
The Elements behind a Modern Christmas
All these elements have contributed something to a Traditional Christmas: Winter Solstice; Festival of Saturnalia; Holly, Ivy & Mistletoe; Christmas Trees; Roman Practices; Christmas Trees; Roman present giving practice; Lords of Misrule; Odin & St Nicholas; Yule Logs; Candle-burning folklore; Carols; Twelfth Night; Plum Pudding, Goose, Turkey, Boar’s Head, Mince Pies & Trifle.
On the Tour we shall explain how and when these various elements were introduced and also suggest how the Christian Nativity fits in.
The Tour
