John Clopton’s Works 1485 - 1497

  • Broadening the moat & transforming it by brick-lining

  • Adding a service range & ? New kitchen

  • Improvements to old Lutons

  • Brick makers, joiners & carpenters

  • Making and forming bricks. Clamps & firing.

  • Mason, joiners & plumbers

  • New statement house built in brick on a single width typical Hall House layout

  • On a massive scale with many large numerous light ‘stone’ windows

  • Major stair tower added to SE corner

Sir William Clopton’s Works 1497 - c1515

  • Added a matching East Wing to include exiting stair tower.

  • Later added a matching West Wing including an internal Kitchen

  • The whole forming England’s first symmetrical House

  • Added Octagon Towers to each wing to underline symmetry

  • Result was England’s first Open Courtyard House.

  • How he extended the Wings and added with projecting wingsWing and later West Wing

  • Guardrobes function and operation

  • Added stables, barn and gatehouse.

Later Works

  • 1578 then Clopton created a Long Gallery over central

  • 1676b Sir Thomas Robinson’s 17th C works, the Avenue, new chimneys & main Stair

  • C1800 Richard Moore replaced visible oak with pine & a fireplace in every room

  • 1825 Hart Logan employed Thomas Hopper to remodel the main rooms in Gothic style

  • 1972 - Patrick Phillips’ various ‘improvements’

  • Tickets can be purchased on the gate. However, this will incur an extra £2.00 charge.

  • Dress with suitable clothing and footwear for the weather!

  • The Tearoom will be open until 15 minutes before closing time.

  • No dogs, except guide dogs, are permitted within the grounds.

  • We operate a no-refunds policy for when we're open. Tickets are not transferrable to other days, or to other events. Please always check our website before travelling to check we are open.

  • The majority of the gardens are reasonably accessible by wheelchair in good weather but less so when underfoot is muddy.
